Disinformation in Elections: Challenges and Implications for Democratic Nations
03/12/2024

📣The conference “Disinformation in Elections: Challenges and Implications for Democratic Nations”, which took place on November 27, 2024, was organized by the Taipei Representative Office in Greece and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in cooperation with the Atlantic Club of Bulgaria.

📌The island nation is considered the global gold standard in combating disinformation in an environment of uncertainty and military threat.

👉Subject to 20,000,000 cyber attacks per month and continuous hybrid attacks, Taiwan has managed to prepare its population and build systems to counter the large-scale spread of state disinformation by China.

👉Taiwan is the first country to include media literacy in its curricula (in 2002), as well as Machine Learning (in 2023). It applies a “whole-of-society-approach”, introduces a dedicated hotline 111, where users can share images and posts with disinformation, adopts legislation (AntiFraud Act, Digital Signature Act, Anti-infiltration Act) and is today the best global example of countering propaganda and disinformation.
