📌On January 8, 2026, in Sofia, Cyprus presented its priorities as the rotating president of the Council of the European Union. The event was organized by Pan-Europe Bulgaria and the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Bulgaria in special partnership with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Bulgarien, the Bulgarian Diplomatic Institute, and the Atlantic Reserve Officers Association.
One of the smallest countries in the EU is taking the helm of Europe at a time when the Union is facing its greatest challenges. The Cyprus Presidency will work towards an autonomous EU – one that can act independently when necessary and together with external partners when possible.
The Cyprus Presidency’s program is built on several clearly defined priorities:

- Autonomy through security and defense, with the aim of strengthening the European Union’s ability to protect its citizens and interests;
- Autonomy through economic competitiveness, including strengthening the internal market and supporting sustainable economic development;
- An autonomous European Union open to the world, which maintains an active role in international relations and promotes cooperation with partners outside the EU;
- A European Union of values, centred on solidarity, social inclusion and ensuring that no one is left behind;
- A long-term financial framework that supports the autonomy and sustainable development of the European Union.

❗️ The event in Sofia provided an opportunity to exchange views and outline the main expectations for Cyprus’ work over the next six months, emphasizing the importance of dialogue between European institutions, Member States, and civil society.
